How to prepare kids for a family photoshoot (and keep it fun!)
Family photoshoots with young children can be both fun and challenging. With a little preparation, you can ensure your session goes smoothly. Here’s how to keep things lighthearted and enjoyable for everyone:
Explain the process - Let your kids know what to expect. Explain that it’s a fun experience and they’ll be able to take some beautiful pictures.
Pick the right time - Schedule the shoot when your children are happiest/energetic – with my experience, in the morning is the best time, but it could be after a meal or a nap (but not before!!!).
Bring their favorite toys-doll - Let them bring a small, comforting toy or anything else which help them feel secure.
Choose comfortable clothes that your kids like - You can choose cute clothes that match the family's colors, but you can also choose clothes that make your children feel comfortable! And most of the time, these comfortable clothes are your children's favorites!
Incorporate play - In my opinion, the best photoshoots I've done were the ones where I let the kids play, jump, run... I was there as an observer and took the right photos at the right time! These lifestyle sessions resulted in the most beautiful photos!
Be flexible and patient - Children can be unpredictable, so allow breaks if needed and let them take the lead occasionally (or all the time 😂). And you could be surprised by the beautiful pictures that you could have during those “breaks time”.
TO SUM UP - A little fun and flexibility can help the whole family enjoy the photoshoot while capturing beautiful memories. I think the best role is that of an observer. You can also interact with the children to put them at ease. If they forget the camera, your session is a success!
Do you want to photograph your family before your children are too old????
